We’ve been working with Friends of Ruskin Park and the Ruskin Park Community Gardeners groups to help with the redevelopment of the Community Garden in Ruskin Park on Denmark Hill.
Funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery, the project aims to support the gardening group and enhance the space they use to facilitate more people getting involved in future. We have worked for a number of months to build new raised beds, including high-level accessible beds, prepare bases for new sheds and greenhouses, improve soil quality in all existing beds, and to design a new holistic planting area, that includes a bed of medicinal plants, and a wildflower and bog planting area alongside a new small pond to encourage wildlife. Each day while we are working in the park, members of the gardening group, as well as wider park volunteers, and invited to come and get involved with the work.
In addition to the development works, we are helping to support the ‘social restoration’ of the garden, by designing and leading a monthly workshop in the garden, to help to grow the garden membership and encourage more people to come and get involved in food growing during the 2020 season. Our upcoming workshops include sessions on wildlife in the garden, spring propagation techniques, and tool maintenance. Each of the workshops are free, but numbers are limited – so if you’d like to come along, sign up to the Friends of Ruskin Park newsletter and you’ll be among the first to hear when tickets are released.
